Water heater leaking or not heating: what to do
Identify visible signs without touching an electric or gas appliance in a wet area.
Water heater leak: safety before diagnosis
If water is near an electrical supply, panel, or gas appliance, move away and do not operate controls. Do not move the water heater or remove its panel to look for the cause.
If the area is safe, observe without touching: does water appear at the tank, a fitting, a valve, or the floor? Is it continuous? Does it increase when a hot-water fixture is used?
Water heater failure: useful information
Before requesting a plumber, note:
- the energy type: electric, gas, or other;
- approximate age and capacity, if visible;
- no hot water, lukewarm water, or a leak;
- noises, odours, or displayed codes without opening the appliance;
- water on the floor, below the unit, or near electrical equipment.
These clues help prepare the request. They are not enough to choose repair versus replacement remotely.
