Plumbing emergency: first safe steps

1. Keep people away from danger

• Stop using a sink, toilet, or appliance that appears to worsen the problem.
• Do not dismantle plumbing or mix products to attempt an emergency drain clearing.

3. Record four useful details

You do not need to diagnose the cause. Note:

1. the room and affected fixture, appliance, or pipe;
2. whether water is still flowing slowly or quickly;
3. whether other fixtures, drains, or units appear affected;
4. approximately when it started and what you safely shut off.

A photo taken from a safe position may help, but do not return to a dangerous area to take one.

4. Request the right kind of help

Emergency services address immediate danger. Electricity and gas utilities address risks involving their networks. A municipality may need to be notified when a public line or several properties appear affected. A plumbing contractor assesses and repairs private plumbing.

Once people are safe, you can prepare an urgent request. The contacted professional must confirm their own availability, timing, and price.
