How to choose a plumber in Québec

A sound choice starts with a verifiable business and clear terms, not only the first available appointment.

Start with the business that will invoice you

Ask for the business’s legal name, address, and licence number. These details should match the estimate and invoice. Then check the licence in official sources; our licence verification guide explains how.

The Office de la protection du consommateur also recommends checking liability insurance and researching the merchant.

Ask five questions before agreeing

  1. What must be inspected before the work is confirmed? An initial description is not always a diagnosis.
  2. What is included and excluded? Ask about parts, labour, travel, and cleanup.
  3. How will the price be calculated? Ask about the proposed rate or price, minimum charges, and taxes before work begins whenever possible.
  4. What happens if the work changes? Agree that additional work and costs must be explained and authorized.
  5. What timing can the professional actually confirm? Separate the callback commitment, estimated arrival, and expected duration of the work.

For planned or substantial work, request a sufficiently detailed written estimate and contract. In an urgent situation, obtain at least the business name and basis of billing before work starts when circumstances allow.

Compare clarity, not promises

The fastest answer is not automatically the best one. Prefer a business that:

  • answers questions clearly;
  • separates observations from what still needs inspection;
  • explains its terms without pressure;
  • puts important details in writing.

Be cautious when a business cannot be identified, refuses to explain billing, or pressures you to authorize undescribed work immediately. A valid licence is essential when required, but it does not guarantee a project’s outcome by itself.

Keep a simple record

Keep the estimate or agreement, changes you authorized, and final invoice. These documents help clarify what was agreed and support questions after the visit.

Plombier Connect can facilitate a match. The professional remains responsible for presenting their offer, terms, and price; you remain free to accept or decline it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always choose the lowest price?

No. Compare what is included, the billing method, exclusions, materials, and how changes will be authorized. Two amounts are comparable only when their scope is sufficiently clear.

Do I have to hire the proposed plumber?

No. A match does not require you to authorize work. Ask for the information you need, then accept or decline the professional’s offer directly.
